With no federal oversight of workplace benefits like paid leave and caregiving policies, corporate leaders are being asked to take the lead. Goldman Sachs , American Express , Deckers Outdoor, S&P Global and Splunk are the top companies for parents in 2024, according to Just Capital's research. The "indirect costs" are the loss of productivity during an employee's leave, temporary replacement and cost of administering a paid leave program. "Paid parental leave is an expensive proposition," said Yvette Lee, an HR knowledge advisor at SHRM. Lee said the investment in paid parental leave and similar policies may make sense in the long run.

The chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee is launching an investigation into Formula 1 and its U.S. owner, Liberty Media , to demand answers about the sport's decision to deny Andretti Global a spot on the grid. The letter is dated Tuesday and addressed to Greg Maffei, the president and CEO of Liberty Media, and Stefano Domenicali, the president and CEO of Formula One Group. "Delaying Andretti Cadillac's entry into Formula One for even one year will harm American consumers to benefit failing Formula One teams," Jordan writes. "Limiting the number of teams in Formula One will increase the price of sponsoring or buying into an existing Formula One team. The letter comes days after Mario Andretti, a former Formula 1 world champion, visited Capitol Hill and spoke at a press conference with lawmakers to pressure the sport to admit Andretti Global.

An American college student looked out at a sea of protesters and spoke of a machine that had grown so “odious” that it had left people of good will little choice. “You’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop,” he said. That scene played out 60 years ago at the University of California, Berkeley. The words were directed at the university leadership, and referring to its restrictions on campus political activity. But the speech, from the student leader Mario Savio, and the sit-in that followed could have happened yesterday.

Skydance Media and its largest private-equity backer RedBird Capital Partners have been wooing Paramount for the better part of a year. The Skydance consortium, including fellow Skydance investor KKR, submitted a revised offer on Sunday. The deal would be worth roughly $32 billion, according to the source, with the value of Paramount and its $15 billion in debt making up the lion's share. Here's what we know about the deal, how much Redstone would get, and what a new Paramount would look like. Keeping Paramount public sets the Skydance bid apart from Apollo's potential offer, according to one of the sources.

Twelve members of the U.S. Congress sent a letter to Formula 1 owner Liberty Media on Wednesday demanding answers for why it is excluding Andretti Global from the sport, giving the American team powerful new allies in its bid to enter F1. "Our team, Andretti Global, is part of every major racing discipline in the world. Last fall Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, accepted the racing team's push to join the grid, saying it met the criteria. Because we have an obligation to protect the American consumer, to protect American companies, and that is our first allegiance. The decision to remove Bakish as CEO comes as Paramount Global closes in on a merger agreement with Skydance Media. A number of large common shareholders, including Gamco Investors, Ariel Investments, Matrix and Aspen Sky Trust have publicly criticized the deal, arguing it destroys value for common shareholders. Paramount Global shares jumped about 5% in premarket trading Monday. Typically, Paramount Global shareholders, such as Gabelli, would compare an offer to the standalone company's prospects — hence his comments about not seeing a sale at all. But by removing Bakish, Redstone and the Paramount Global board are now throwing the status quo into chaos.

CNN —Britain’s Prince and Princess of Wales have released a new photo of Prince Louis to mark his sixth birthday on Tuesday, the first image to be released by the family since a photo-editing scandal erupted last month. A royal source said the Waleses were grateful for the birthday messages they have received for Louis and the photo was taken by Kate, 42, in the last few days in Windsor. “This is in an unprecedented time for the Wales family as the princess continues her recovery,” the source said. The Waleses have released a celebratory photo of Louis each year to mark his birthday. Three years after police officers in Northern California pinned a man face down for about five minutes as he begged for relief, prosecutors announced that the officers would face charges of involuntary manslaughter in the man’s death. The charges against Eric McKinley, James Fisher and Cameron Leahy, all with the Alameda Police Department at the time, in the death of Mario Gonzalez, 26, were announced on Thursday, after a review by the Alameda County district attorney’s Public Accountability Unit. The county’s previous district attorney closed the investigation into the officers in 2022, saying that the evidence did not justify criminal charges. But Pamela Price, who was elected district attorney later that year, reopened the case a year ago. The new charges were announced just days after the county’s Registrar of Voters announced that a recall campaign against Ms. Price had submitted enough signatures to proceed.
